Why The Guideschool? Because other companies market their programs as a "guide school" when in actuality, it's a glorified week-long vacation camp where you learn how to fish. The Guideschool is a cut and dry, well regimented program geared towards teaching you the skills you need to be an Alaskan fishing guide.
The Guideschool is the only program including OUPV certification in our course. Why does this matter? Because most lodge managers in Alaska require their guides to be OUPV certified through the Coast Guard. Having an OUPV license will put you well ahead of the other guys looking to guide in Alaska.

Here at The Guideschool, we have over 50 years of Alaskan guiding and lodge operations experience under our belts. One of the primary reasons we started The Guideschool is to prevent a problem we and other lodge managers face year after year: finding guides who are OUPV certified.

COURSEWORK...
Your learning experience will include but will not be limited to the following:
-OUPV Certification: two days in the classroom devoted to becoming licensed through the Coast Guard.
-Casting Instruction: learn to improve your casting, but more importantly, learn to analyze and improve your clients' casting techniques...
-Speycasting: learn to effectively cast and teach your clients to effectively cast a two-handed rod using modern speycasting techniques...
-Advanced Fishing Techniques: learn to coach your clients and effectively teach them advanced fishing techniques associated with nymphing, mending, swinging, etc...
-Guiding Instruction: learn adaptive ways to line your clients up to cover water and fish effectively depending on their abilities and expectations while wadeguiding, human anchoring, etc...
-Rowing Instruction: learn to safely handle a boat/raft and effectively fish water "on the sticks."
-Jetboat Instruction: learn to effectively read water and gain quicker reaction time while safely operating a jetboat in narrow, skinny channels identical to many rivers across much of Alaska.
-Outboard Mechanics: how to troubleshoot, diagnose, and fix outboard problems...
-Food Prep/Cooking: learn prepare and cook outstanding shorelunches.
-Wilderness First Aid/CPR
-Airplane Safety
